Which grants apply to AI and digitisation

Several active schemes cover software, AI, automation, and digital infrastructure:

Smart & Sustainable Business - A 50% cash grant up to EUR 100,000 for digitisation projects. Deadline: 18 December 2026. This is one of the largest direct grants available and applies well to AI platform rollouts, process automation, and system integration.

Micro Invest 2024 - A 65% tax credit, up to EUR 65,000 over three years. Available to micro enterprises and self-employed, with a lower barrier to entry than cash grants.

Start-up Finance - A repayable advance aimed at software development and innovative products. Deadline: 30 September 2026. Useful if you're building a custom AI tool.

Innovate - Innovation aid for R&D-heavy projects. Deadline: 30 October 2026.

Digitalise Your SME - A dedicated grant scheme specifically for digital transformation, including AI adoption.

There's also a de minimis cap to keep in mind: EUR 300,000 of state aid over three years per company. We track your de minimis exposure across schemes so you don't exceed it.

Compliance and reporting - After approval, grants require progress reports and evidence of spend. We keep the paperwork current so you don't lose the funding partway through.

What the process looks like

1. Free assessment (30 minutes) - We look at your business, your goals, and your current setup. We tell you honestly whether a grant-funded AI project makes sense and which scheme to target.

2. Scoping - We define the project: what ABI will do for you, the timeline, and the budget the grant will cover.

3. Application - We write and submit the application with your approval. Typical lead time to a complete submission is 2 to 4 weeks.

4. Assessment - The granting body reviews. Timelines vary by scheme; Smart & Sustainable and Innovate decisions can take several months. We track the status and respond to any queries.

5. Approval and rollout - Once approved, we implement the AI project on the agreed schedule and manage the grant reporting until closure.

Timeline reality check

Grant timelines in Malta are not instant. The Digitalise Your SME and Smart & Sustainable deadlines are real cut-offs; miss one and you wait for the next call. If your target deadline is 18 December 2026 for Smart & Sustainable, we recommend starting the application no later than October to avoid a rushed submission.

That said, you don't have to wait for grant approval to see results. Many clients begin a 30-day ABI trial while the application is in progress, so the business starts benefiting immediately and the grant funds the longer-term rollout.

How much can you get

It depends on the scheme and your company size, but combined, a well-structured project can recover a substantial share of your AI investment:

Up to EUR 100,000 in direct cash under Smart & Sustainable.

Up to EUR 65,000 in tax credits under Micro Invest.

Repayable advances under Start-up Finance.

In practice, a grant-funded ABI deployment for a professional services firm or a manufacturer often recovers half or more of the project cost.

Malta is actively pushing digitisation funding right now. The grants are generous, but they're competitive and deadline-driven. Companies that apply early with a well-prepared submission win the funding. Companies that apply late with a thin application don't.
